Welcome to the Barry Harris Voicing Trainer!
This app helps you learn and practice Barry Harris-style chord voicings on guitar. It presents you with chord voicings to identify and complete on the fretboard.
How to Play
- Enable audio: Click "Enable Audio" to activate sound features (required by browsers)
- Check the fretboard header: Shows the scale and voicing type, plus bass note if enabled in settings
- Observe string activity: Active strings are bright while inactive ones are dimmed
- See the shown note: One note of the voicing is already displayed on the fretboard with its role labeled
- Complete the voicing: Click on the fretboard to place the remaining notes of the chord
- Get feedback: Correct notes appear in white, wrong clicks flash red
- Use audio hints: Click the play button to hear the complete voicing
Understanding the Display
- Fretboard Header: Shows scale type (Maj6, Min6, Dom7, 7b5), voicing name, and optionally bass note (e.g., "Min6 Drop 2 (b3 bass)")
- String Opacity: Active strings for the current voicing are bright, inactive strings are dimmed
- Note Labels: Show chord tones like "R" (root), "3" (3rd), "b7", etc.
- Play Button: Provides audio feedback of the complete voicing
- Visual Feedback: Completed voicings play automatically for 2 seconds
Settings
- Scale Types: Choose from Major 6 Diminished, Minor 6 Diminished, Dominant 7 Diminished, and 7b5 Diminished
- Voicing Types: Select from Drop 2, Drop 3, Drop 2+4, Triads, Thirds, Low Shell, and High Shell
- String Sets: Different combinations available for each voicing type
- Bass Hint: Toggle showing bass note in the fretboard header
- Display Note: Choose which note to show (random, smallest string, second smallest, third smallest)
- Volume: Adjust audio playback volume from 0-100% (soundfont is quiet, so higher values recommended)
Audio Features
- Play Button: Click the play button next to "Next" to hear the complete voicing
- Auto-play on Completion: When you complete a voicing correctly, it automatically plays the chord for 2 seconds
- Acoustic Guitar Sound: Uses high-quality acoustic guitar nylon string samples
Completion Messages
- Perfect! - Completed with no wrong clicks
- Nice! - Completed with 1 wrong click
- Good! - Completed with 2-3 wrong clicks
- Complete! (took X tries) - Completed with 4+ wrong clicks
Statistics
Track your progress with detailed statistics showing:
- Overall accuracy and completion rates
- Performance by scale type
- Performance by voicing type
- Detailed breakdowns by scale + voicing + bass role + string set
Note: Only perfect completions (0 wrong clicks) count as "correct" in statistics.
Tips for Success
- Start with one scale type and voicing to build familiarity
- Use the play button to hear what the complete voicing should sound like
- Pay attention to the bass hint - it helps orient the voicing
- Notice which strings are active (bright) vs inactive (dimmed)
- The fretboard header shows the scale and voicing type
- Use the "Next" button if you get stuck on a particular voicing
- Check your statistics to identify areas for improvement
