Welcome to the Interval Identification Trainer
This app helps you practice identifying chord tones inside voicings on the fretboard. Each question shows a voicing and asks you to find a specific interval (for example: Root, b3, 3rd, 5th, b5, 6th, b7).
How to Play
- Observe the fretboard: A chord voicing is shown as white dots on the strings (the active notes of the voicing).
- Find the target interval: The instruction heading tells you which interval to locate (for example: "Find the Root" or "Find the b3").
- Click the note: Click the dot on the fretboard that matches the requested interval.
- Wrong answers: If you click a wrong dot it will mark the note with a red X so you can see which choices were incorrect during that question.
Settings
- Hints: Use the Hint mode control in Settings to choose how (or whether) a hint is shown. Options:
- None — no hint is shown.
- Random — one other active note is shown with its interval label.
- Lowest Note — shows the interval label on the lowest-sounding active non-target note in the voicing.
- Highest Note — shows the interval label on the highest-sounding active non-target note in the voicing.
- Volume: Use the slider to adjust playback volume.
- Interval filters: Select which interval groups you want the trainer to quiz you on (Root, 3/b3, 5/b5, 6/b7). Use fewer groups to focus practice.
- Scale Types: Choose which scale families to include when generating voicings. Disable scales you don't want to practice right now.
- Voicing Types: Pick voicing shapes and string-set combos (Drop 2, Drop 3, Shells, etc.). These control which voicings are presented.
Tips for Success
- Start with one or two interval groups enabled to build recognition.
- Use Hint Mode initially, then turn it off to test recall.
- Track accuracy in the Statistics panel to see which intervals you tend to miss, broken down by voicing type.
- If you see a low percentage for a particular interval under a voicing type, practice that voicing specifically by enabling only that voicing set in Settings.
